cold start problems

Guys. I had this problem since October in my '06 FX35.. 1st they replaced the crank sensor.. No dice it still happened.

I took it back last week and they said they had a FX come in in December and they fixed it. They replaced the AC amplifier and my FX starts right up and seems to runs better.

I'll keep you posted but after a week with the new AC amplifier I have yet to have the hard start issue.

my 06 does this as well. only in the cold.. below 40

it has not left me stranded, embarassed or overly-aggravated but being the type to pour dough into preventative maintenance i want to fix the issue, rather than ignore it!

Well everyone, we pretty much established that this occurs to mainly 2006 models. So I'm trying to figure out whats really causing this issue. So moving on forward, state if you have the tech package or not. I wonder if the start up issue has anything to do with cars with the tech package or not and maybe even replacing the battery in the I-Key will solve this issue. Hopefully by process of elimination, we can figure it out eventually.

Just to let everyone know that I've been having the starting problem for the past two years and recently every single time i start my car it took 2 times every time to start. So I did alot of research and finally decided to buy the AC Amplifier and it seemed to have fix the problem. Now my car starts up like a champ like a brand new car. It cost me 344.00 but it was well friggin worth it. I was hesitant on buying it but I'm glad I did. Just wanted to let everyone know. I installed it on saturday and havent had the starting problem at all. Ill follow up in a month and let everyone know how it goes.

Alright guys just checking back in, the AC Amplifier was the solution to fixing all of my starting problems, haven't had the issue since and it starts up better than it ever has. Over a month of starting the car up without anymore extra cranks of anything. Hopefully you guys that have the same issue get it resolved. Thanks

I have the tech package. The battery in the I key is new so the battery is not the issue :(

It sounds like you've been having this issue in the warmer seasons too but I think the majority of us only have this problem in the winter. The AC amplifier may still be the solution for us all but it also may not be. Thanks for letting us know, though!

Hi again. I've only had the starting problem when the temp started to get colder for the past 2 winters and last month it started having the problem almost everytime. So I assume the ac amp finally started to fully crap the bed. Thansk

Mine is a 04 fx35. Got the same problem last winter/spring, when it was lower then 0*C. Battery change didn't help

Oh okay. Ill gladly pay $300 to fix the start up issue!!! I guess we'll have to wait til the winter to see for sure that the AC amplifier was the problem! Thanks for sharing the info with us.

Anyone knows the part number or which item it is on the infinitipartsusa?

I can't seem to find it. I have the same problem with my 03, but it is very random and doesn't seem to be weather related. It happens in both warm or cold days.

Just bought a new to me 06 and I'm having the cold start issues. Has the AC amplifier replacement been working for you so far jetblacac?

A temporary solution before starting your 06-08 fx, turn on to accesory and wait 30 seconds. You will hear the flap in the throttle stop moving. Then try to crank. For me it's been working. But im still gona change the A/C amplifier/rectifier.

What is the ac amplifier? and where is it located? I appear to have the same concern with my FX where it is starting every morning with a low to high fluctuation, then clears out, and at times cranks over with a no start on the first try. I have been searching online for this amplifier you are referring to, but no luck. Thanks in advance.

Hi, the AC Amplifier is located behind the panel where you control your temperature controls, a/c heater fans. That whole panel just pops off if you can get your fingers behind the edge and pull it towards you. Once you pop that off it will be the gray color flat box under the screen. I did alot of research online and read pretty every thread known to man kind and narrowed it down that part. I even went to infiniti and asked them what the problem was and they couldnt even figure it out. I went 2 years with the starting issue and was pretty aggravated. It mainly only happened when the temps got cold but towards the end it happened every time I try to start my car. I'm not saying that that part will fix your car, but it fixed mine. My car now starts before than it ever has. Here's the link to the part.

I've been experiencing the same problem for the past three winters and I finally got a chance to drop it off at the dealer. They've had it for a week now and they're telling me that the problem is the AC Amplifier. At first they said that it might be a problem with the density of the engine oil, then the fuel pump & the injector but after receiving help from the central Infiniti database and they said that this issue is caused by a bad AC Amplifier. They sounded very confident that this was the problem so I'm guessing that Infiniti is aware of this problem.

Unfortunately, I am out of warranty so I have to pay for the repair out of my pocket. The dealer originally quoted me ~ $860 w/ tax ($244 diagnostic + $460 part + $120 labor) but after talking to my service manager I was able to receive at 15% discount. I thought about buying the part and replacing it myself especially since the procedure doesn't seem complicated at all (same steps as installing an iPod adapter) but I decided to just let the dealer handle the repair in case the AC unit ends up not being the culprit and the problem persists (crossing fingers). They said they'll fix it in a day or two and keep the car until the end of the week to make sure that the problem goes away with the new part.

I really hope that this fixes the problem! I will let everyone know later in the winter whether the problem is gone for good!

I'm glad that they narrowed it down to the AC Amp. Like I said, I was in the same position as you for the past 2 years and it was almost to the point that I got rid of the car. They told me that it was my battery when I brought my car in one time, but I replaced the battery about a month before so I knew that it couldn't be the battery. They tried to tell me that it had to be replaced with an Infiniti battery for it to start properly. I called BS on that one. After reading every thread out there about people replacing their fuel pumps, spark plugs, key immobilizer, etc. and still not fixing the problem I finally came across one person that had the Amp replaced and they said after months since the amp being replaced they haven't had the problem come back. Before having the amp replaced they had all of the other parts replaced by infiniti and didn't seem to fix the starting problem. So after reading that thread I decided to order the part and replace it myself. I knew that Infiniti was going to charge around 800+ to fix the AC amp, but after researching online for the price I decided to do it myself, it literally took me less than 10 mins to take the old one out and to put the new one in and everything. I totally understand what you mean by just letting them handle it just incase the amp doesn't fix it. I was just totally confident that the amp was the problem so that's why I took the chance. Please let us know if the amp fixes your FX just so everybody else that has the problem can fix there's.

Just bought a new to me 06 and I'm having the cold start issues. Has the AC amplifier replacement been working for you so far jetblacac?

Sorry Mogie, I haven't been on the forums for a while until recently because I received and email. Yes the AC amp has solved my issues with the starting. My FX has been starting better than it ever has since the replacement. It just sounds much stronger on the startup. By reading almost every single thread online on this forum and other forums it seems like its mainly the 06 FX's that have this starting problem. If you don't feel comfortable fixing your car yourself or are doubting at all you should bring your FX into the dealership and have them somehow test the AC amp. They might try to tell you it could be a different part this and that, but have them test the AC amp if they can. But be prepared if they diagnose your FX and definitely narrow it down to the AC amp be prepared to pay around 800+ for everything. Good luck with everything bud let us all know how you make out. JET

What is the part number for the AC amp? Where is it located to change?

In new york here is has gotten cold. Pretty much cold everyday. That saying, I'm having the cold startup issue every day. One time it did not even wana start.
Gotta get this resolved ASAP.

I hear ya on the cold weather part. I live in Massachusetts and I am also getting the cold weather but not the start problem :). The AC Amp is located behind the HVAC panel inside the car below the screen. That's in the 06-08, not sure about the 03-05. That panel just pops out if you can get your fingers under it. It's not that hard. Once you pop that panel off it will be the light grayish flat box right below the screen. I can't remember the exact measurements but it's probably about 1 inch thick by about 8 inches long. I'm not saying that this part will fix everyone's FX but it fixed mine and a couple of others. Any more questions feel free to ask. Also if you do plan on replacing it yourself, I always disconnect my battery before doing anything that has to do with electrical just incase. Oh ya also, if i can remember correctly as for the part number, they need your vin number for your car to order the right part. JET
